i am mum
Exhibited at Swell Sculpture Festival 2015
Birch ply and silver plated found objects
The sculpture is dedicated to my mother, June who passed away in 2014, aged 84. Mum taught me how to cook, collect, eat ice cream and fossick on the beach. We would walk for miles to pick up shells, driftwood and build sandcastles whilst soaking up the blue sky and sunshine. In later life Mum suffered from both Cancer and Dementia, her memories of ice creams and beach walks had long gone, most days she didn't know me. One day she was looking at me with a puzzled look on her face. My brother asked her if she knew who I was. Mum replied, “No, but I do know she is someone special”. Only a loving mother could say that.
